What is Networked Attached Storage (NAS) ?

Networked Attached Storage (NAS) means that the computer used for data storage is dedicated for storage and is accessible by the home computer network such as wifi, or hard wired as typically used for businesses. There are several ways to store computer data in addition to a computer itself. NAS is one way that provides some advantages vs the computer or cloud:

  • Provides a wide range of user features
    • File Storage with Encryption
    • Multiple Accounts (Share personal videos with family and friends.)
    • Simultaneous Access
    • Access from anywhere (You can install the server in your home and access while you are away.)
    • Use your NAS as a DVD recorder like you did with a VHS recorder
    • Use your NAS to store your music and play that music anywhere while using your iPhone
  • Scalable as user needs require, but may require additional memory different hard drives or even the addition of expansion units
  • No monthly fee, except for some packages at the discretion of the user – MacAfee Anti Virus, Security Surveillance, 3rd party cloud services, etc.

The NAS is always on – 24/7 or can be put on a power schedule or can be set to go to sleep when it is not used for a long time.
